WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – Monday marks three years since Russia invaded Ukraine, setting off a war that the Trump administration is now trying to end.
President Donald Trump welcomed French President Emmanuel Macron to the White House Monday.
The two talked about ending the war in Ukraine.
“It’s time to end this bloodletting and restore peace and I think we’re going to do it,” said Trump.
President Macron says the world must stand up to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“Let’s try to get something first, which is which can be assessed, checked and verified,” said Macron.
However, President Trump says Putin wants to make a deal.
“When I got here, one of the first calls I made was to President Putin, and we were treated with great respect. And they want to, they want to end this war,” said Trump.
The U.S.-Ukrainian relationship has been strained since Inauguration Day.
President Trump blamed Ukraine for the war and called Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy a dictator.
Zelenskyy, on a video call, asked for continued U.S. support and a seat at the negotiating table.
“We believe that real and lasting peace is possible if we stand together,” said Zelenskyy.
President Trump also called for other countries to contribute more when it comes to Ukraine aid.
Macron said Europe is ready to do that.
Meanwhile in Kyiv, world leaders met to announce new military aid and sanctions on Russia.
“We hope that we can finish this war this year not in three years,” said Zelenskyy.
The United Nations also weighed in, approving a resolution demanding Russia’s withdrawal, despite U.S. opposition.
The U.S. favored a resolution that did not mention Russia’s invasion.
